Kitchenalia - Danish Water Filter

I am describing this as a water filter or moisture abosrber but, this is actually guess work on my part as I have never seen one or anything like this before.  I think it was used to either absorb moisture in a larder or filter water.  On the front of the  jar is written 'Gem Refinite'.  Inside there is wire mesh and underneath this are small mineral granules.  There is a small hole on the base which is where the water could filter through.  Also on the base is stamped 'KOBENHAVNS FAJANCEFABRIK DANMARK'. 

The jar stands 6 inches high and the diameter is 3.5 inches.  It is particularly heavy (weighing over 1kg) because of the metal interior.

This is an unusual example of kitchenalia!
