Flour Barrel

Kitchenalia - Flour Barrel

Early wooden flour barrels such as this19th century example were sometimes painted but, fortunately, this one hasn't been.  They were also used to store butter but this has been used for flour as there are still particles of flour in the cracks!  By the 20th century these wooden barrels were repaced by enamel bread bins.

I just love this barrel and I hesitate to mention the imperfections as it is so appealing as it is.  The lower ring to go around the base of the barrel is missing, part of the top is slightly loose and the nails are rusty.

The whole barrel measures 9 inches in height and the diameter of the lid is 9 inches (it is slighly larger at the base).  The thickness of the wood is half an inch and it is surprisingly weighty.

This is a rare item, I have never seen one before and it would look fabulous in a country kitchen.
