Architectural Antiques - Winnowing Basket (AA26)
This item comes from France and I had no idea what it was until I saw a painting by Jean-Francois Millet entitled 'The Winnower' painted in 1867. A winnowing basket was used to separate the corn kernels from the outer husks or chaff. The thrashed corn was thrown up from the basket and the breeze (sometimes created by waving a sheet) blew the chaff from the heavier kernels.
This item is completely unique and would just look stunning on a wall in an old barn conversion, large farmhouse kitchen, restaurant or pub.
It is in great condition considering its age with minimal damage to the wicker and no holes. There is evidence of some very old, long departed woodworm on the handles. It measures 53 inches length by 35 inches width and 14 inches height (at the back which would have been held against the person).
You won't see another of these so be quick and buy it before someone else does! We are open to any offers on this item if you care to email us.
